Companies operating energy pipelines are teaming together to learn how you, our neighbors and gas utility customers, want us to better communicate safety information about existing pipelines in the United States.

As an industry, we are working with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) and other stakeholders to review and update the “Public Awareness Programs for Pipeline Operators” guidelines for safety communication, known as American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice (RP) 1162.

Your input is important and will help us communicate more effectively with you and others like you who live and work near pipelines. Your feedback and comments will be provided to the 1162 Task Group for consideration as it finalizes recommendations for the 3rd Edition of API RP 1162.

The goal of API Recommended Practice 1162 is to provide guidance for pipeline operators on the development and implementation of their Public Awareness Programs. These programs are important because they involve communication of safety information to people like you who live and work along pipeline systems.

Please review API RP 1162 here or in the Document Library and share your suggestions below on the recommended practice and how we can better communicate with people like you who live and work near pipelines. When making comments, please provide a page or section number so we know exactly which section you’re referring to.

Comments, along with all feedback provided through this site, will be provided to the task group to consider as they finalize recommendations for the 3rd Edition of API RP 1162. Please note that comments made through this site do not constitute formal comments on the document. Once the document is finalized, it will enter API’s formal Ballot Process, which includes a public comment period.
